Dear reader,
We’re partway through March, otherwise known as Board Game Month in my household. Ever since 2020, I’ve taken two long weekends in March to attend local gaming events: Granite Game Summit in New Hampshire and PAX East in Boston. These are just two of the cons that have become staples on my calendar, but they’ve become a mark of the end of winter and some of my most anticipated events each year.
Do you ever travel for your hobbies? I want to know what hobbies, where you go, and how frequently!
I write a lot about doing things solo but one of my real passions is community building and hobbies are, of course, a great way to bring people together! I love knowing that I’ll see so many of my friends over these two weekends - mostly my New England gaming friends at Granite Game Summit as that’s a local event geared toward making ample space and time to play a lot of games in one weekend, and “PAX friends” from across the country who I see 2-3 times per year at the various East Coast PAX events.
Because these trips are about spending time with friends, I room with my friends on these trips. I also make an effort to schedule some games in advance in order to make sure that longer games fit in and I get to see all the friends I want to at each event. And I recently wrote about how this depth of planning goes against my unique perspective on travel:
Flexibility is my travel superpower. What's yours?
Dear reader, I’m planning ahead for a work trip in April at the same time that I’m getting ready for a solo weekend getaway followed shortly after by a gaming trip with friends. And boy oh boy does each trip have a different personality… and guess which trip is the easiest for me to prepare for.
And yet, these gaming trips are two of my most coveted weekends of the year.
Board gaming has been a hobby of mine since college and something I grew up with long before then. When I’ve moved to new cities, board gaming has been how I’ve built community and made friends. And as it turns out, Boston has a thriving board game scene that I’ve become a part of over the past 5 years.
And this gaming community has brought me so many new opportunities to travel, too! Beyond events in Boston and throughout New England, I travel to another PAX event in Philadelphia each December and am looking forward to my first international board game trip to a con in Germany this fall!
